Does The Impact Structure/Bumper Beam Need To Be Removed To Install Hitch on 2019 Subaru Ascent
Question:
I am looking to get Hitch receiver for my 2019 Subaru Ascent premium and primarily use for bike racks. I want to get hitch receiver which can be used for trailers in the future. I came across - the Draw-Tite hitch # 76253 and the EcoHitch # 306-X7381 Q1 - Does the bumper beam need to be removed for both the models? Q2 - Would it be easier to install wiring kit now when hitch receiver is being installed or can it be done at later stage? Thanks

Yes, both the Draw-Tite hitch part # 76253 and EcoHitch part # 306-X7381 require removal of the impact structure. Since both the Draw-Tite and EcoHitch are concealed cross tube designs the impact structure must be removed to make room for the cross member of the hitch. Curt hitch part # C13400 for the 2019 Subaru Ascent does not require removal of the impact structure because it is installed below the bumper.
I recommend the Draw-Tite hitch part # 76253 because the cost is less expensive then the EcoHitch and the quality, design and installation times are the same. The Draw-Tite also gives you about 11 inches more ground clearance for carrying a bike rack compared to the other options. I have attached an installation video for your reference.
A lot of our customers install the wiring when they install the hitch but it can be done at a later stage. Since the Draw-Tite concealed cross tube design requires removal of the impact structure they recommend it be done by a professional installer. However the wiring is a plug and play option that plugs into the vehicle's wiring harness so lot of our customers install it at home. I recommend Tekonsha wiring part # 118790 because it can handle 4 more amps per circuit compared to the other options.
