Trailer Hitch for 4 Inch Square Bumper

Question:

I recently purchased a bumper mount hitch. I have a 4 inch bumper. The hitch is a little too small to fit on the bumper. any ideas on how to get it to go on? It measures just 3 and 7/8 on the outside. at the base it is closer to 4 inches.

If the bumper mount hitch you purchased is too small for your 4 inch bumper then there's really no way to securely mount it without modifying either the hitch or your bumper, which I don't recommend. Installing the hitch in any way other than what's intended will likely reduce its capacity to an unknown number since it's not been tested in that manner which could lead to damage.

A much better option is going to be with a hitch like the Curt # E-100 that's specifically designed to attach to a 4 inch square bumper like what you have. This uses the included hardware to simply mount around the bumper to provide you with a 2 inch receiver with a 350 pound tongue weight capacity and a 3,500 pound towing weight limit. If you are planning on using the hitch for non-trailer loads (bike racks, cargo carriers, etc) then Curt does require the use of a stabilizing strap # 18050.

I have attached a short video demonstration on this hitch that you can check out as well.
