Can I Tow a Small Box Trailer or Flat Trailer with 2005 Honda Pilot?

Question:

I would like to set up my 2005 Honda Pilot to tow a small box trailer, usually about 5 miles per trip My mechanic said this vehicle could not be set up for towing, but why not? I am only pulling a box trailer or flat trailer short distances.

According to your owner's manual the vehicle has been designed to tow a trailer so it doesn't make sense why your mechanic would say that. There is an entire section in your owner's manual about towing to assist with the weight restrictions for your trailer that you simply want to stay within the parameters of. On page 173 of the online manual it states "Your vehicle has been designed to tow a trailer, as well as for carrying passengers and their cargo".

I recommend the Draw-Tite Max-Frame Trailer Hitch Receiver - Custom Fit - Class III - 2" # 75599 because it will allow for the full spare tire fit without trimming. Then I recommend the T-One Vehicle Wiring Harness with 4-Pole Flat Trailer Connector # 118336 which is a really reliable harness that installs behind the driver's side trim panel in the cargo area without any splicing required. The harness is stored in your cargo area when not in use.

Finally, I recommend the etrailer.com Ball Mount Kit for 2" Hitches - 7,500 lbs # 989900 which will give you different options for the rise and drop needed as well as different hitch ball sizes. I've attached an article to help you determine the correct rise or drop needed in your ball mount for level towing.
