ICC Bumper and Trailer Hitchfor 2006 Ford F-Series Cab and Chassis
Question:
Does the Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver - Custom Fit - Class V Commercial Duty - 2-1/2inch - C15845 provide any protection for underrun in a rear end collision or would an ICC bunper be needed in addition on a cab and chassis truck with no other rear end equipment?

Helpful Expert Reply:
The Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver - Custom Fit - Class V Commercial Duty - 2-1/2" # C15845 will come down about 8 inches from the frame. It does add some support to help with an underrun in a rear end collision so as long as the drop is enough but it isn't designed for that use. It isn't anywhere near as deep a drop as an ICC bumper and if you want to add that I recommend the Buyers Products Vehicle ICC Bumper - 62" Long x 17-1/2" Tall # 3371809025 which is made for the 34 inch wide chassis frame. That ICC bumper is 4 inch c-channel steel so it is bulky and sturdy with a total width of 62 inches so it will be a bigger help from slight angles as well. It appears they can be installed together as long as the brackets on the hitch are still used, and the slight bend in the side bracket of the hitch is accounted for.
I've attached a photo to assist.
