How Does Weight Distribution System Install on Trailer with Clearance Issues Above Frame

Question:

I’m in the process of installing my new weight distribution hitch and I find that I don’t have enough clearance between the hitch and the body of my trailer to mount the frame brackets the recommended 28.5-30.5” away from the ball. The furthest I can place them is about 26.5”, maybe 27 if I were to cut down the carriage bolts. Is the system still going to be useable and function correctly or should I stop here and find another solution?

It is possible to install weight distribution on a trailer like yours where there's interference above the frame where the spring bar hangers need to attach but the Husky Centerline you have now won't work.

What you'll need is a weight distribution system that you can bolt spring bar hangers to the side of the frame rails which circumvents the frame clearance issue all together. For that you'll want a Reese system so you can use the bolt on brackets part # RP58305. See pic to see what this looks like installed.

Then for a Reese system with a similar rating to the Centerline you'd want the part # RP66542 which has a tongue weight range of between 600-1,200 lbs.
