What Size Hitch Does 2019 Subaru Outback Wagon Need to Carry 3 Bike Rack
Question:
Why is it that Subaru only puts 1 1/4 class 1 receivers on their vehicles but if you go to places like U-Haul they recommend putting 2 inch receiver on my 2019 Subaru Outback ? Obviously it’s ok , but what’s up with Subaru? I love platform racks - is the Kuat 3 transfer a good rack for my outback?

Factory hitches typically are the size and rating that fits most uses for the hitch on the specific vehicle. So smaller vehicles typically have 1-1/4 inch hitches, mid size vehicles typically have 2 inch hitches, and heavier duty trucks will have 2-1/2 or sometimes 3 inch hitches. Some people like smaller hitches as they are somewhat less visible, but most prefer 2 inch hitches as they have the most accessories made for them and have great weight capacities. Now Subaru 1-1/4 inch hitches are pretty unique too in that they pin hole of the hitch is very close to the end of the opening so it's hard to fit most bike racks into them. For that reason we strongly recommend going with an aftermarket hitch on Subarus for carrying bike racks.
The Kuat Transfer 3-bike rack part # KU24FR that you referenced is a great bike rack but will require a 2 inch hitch to be installed on your 2019 Subaru Outback Wagon. I recommend the # 76227 for this vehicle because it gives you a 2 inch hitch like you'd need to carry more than 2 bikes and because only the hitch opening hangs below the rear bumper which gives it more of a concealed look.
