Can Heat Shield Be Re-Installed on 2018 Ford Escape After Installing Hitch E98866
Question:
Why does the heat shield need to be trimmed for hitch installation? Is it a hitch to frame direct contact issue/bolt length issue? Can the heat shield removal cause a metal fatigue issue for the frame?

Expert Reply:
Installation of hitch # E98866 does require you to trim the heat shield at the points that contact the frame rails and to then re-install it after trimming it. This step is required for many hitches on many vehicles and there is no risk of heat-related damage to the vehicle or the hitch. This trimming is detailed in step 2 of the linked installation instructions and the pertinent diagram is linked for you.
