Adding 7-Way Trailer Wiring to 2001 Toyota Tacoma
Question:
I want to add a seven blade trailer connector to a 2001 Tacoma which has no tow package connector what so ever with the exception of a trailer hitch. With that said Im not so concerned about the e-brakes on the trailer as I dont intend to pull anything over 1000 lbs, but want to have that wiring but no controlled in case that changes in the future. I could get by with a 4 pin plug, but I want to be able to charge the trailers accessorys battery while pulling and I like the idea of the trailers backup lights coming on when backup into a camping spot. Ive seen the custom fit to a 2001 Taco for the 4 plug. But I want to enhance to a 7 pin plug which would have all the functionality of a 7 pin with the exception of e-brakes for trailers which may or may not be added later. Thx, Rick

To get the 7-way trailer connector you are seeking, I recommend starting with the T-One Vehicle Wiring Harness with 4-Pole Flat Trailer Connector # 118379. This will connect to your factory wiring behind the tail lights without any splicing. Then you will use the 7-Way RV Upgrade Kit for Trailer Brake Controller Installation # ETBC7L which gives you the 7-way connector, the circuit breaker for the 12V power wire and the yellow reverse light connection. The blue wire is for a brake controller output that you can add at a later time if desired. The white wire with the ring terminal gets connected to your vehicle frame. I've attached a video to assist.
If you don't want to do any further wiring when adding a brake controller you can simply use the Curt Echo Wireless # C51180 with the above components and you will be all set.
