Upgrading Axles from 2,200 lbs to 3,500 lbs to Utilize 10 Inch Electric Brake Assemblies
Question:
I have a deck over snowmobile trailer with tandem 2,200 LBS axles with a single pair of 7” electric brakes and 20.5x8-10 tires. The brakes have been giving me lots of problems and I have spent a lot of money trying to get these to provide sufficient braking with no success. I have decided to upgrade to 10” brakes and ST145R12 tires to maintain my height/clearance and have some questions about the conversion. - Will ST145R12 tires fit on all 10” drums i.e. 10 x 1-1/2”, 10 x 1-3/4”, 10 x 2-1/4”? - Which size 10” brake assembly is best for my application? - Can 10” brakes be installed on my 2,200 LBS axles or will there be issues with axle diameter/braking assembly bore size causing me to change the axles to 3,500 LBS?

The 4 hole brake mounting flange will work for 10 inch brakes because the 7 inch and 10 inch assemblies use the same 2-7/8 inch on center mounting holes. The brake assemblies like # AKEBRK-35 or self-adjusting assemblies like # AKEBRK-35-SA will both fit 10 x 2-1/4 inch hubs.
The issue you will find is with the 2,200 lb spindles because you won't find the 10 inch hubs compatible, so you will need to upgrade your axles as you stated to the 3,500 lbs axles. We have a couple of options for you depending on your axle length and spring locations.
If you have 89 inch hub face to hub face and 74 inch spring seat centers then the # e43SR is the route to go. If you have wider 95 inch hubs and 80 inch spring centers then the # 7359765-EB is the better option. If you currently have torsion axles or different measurements then the Timbren Axle-Less Trailer Suspension System w Electric Brake Hubs - Straight Spindle - 3,500 lbs # A35RS545E is my recommendation. This will bolt directly to your trailer frame and has the integrated suspension. You simply add a 2 inch square tube (not included) to the integrated holes on the assemblies and you will have your electric brakes, higher capacity axle and suspension, as well as better ground clearance.
The Kenda Karrier S-Trail ST145/R12 Radial Tire w/ 12" White Spoke Wheel - 5 on 4-1/2 - LR D # AM31199DX will be a great option for your wheels and tires.
