Brake Controller Recommendation and Installation Tips for a 2011 GMC Terrain
Question:
I just bought a new 2011 GMC Terrain SLT with factory installed 1-1/4inch hitch and 4-pole connector which is rated at 3500# with trailer brakes. Will the HM40975-11998 part work to replace the 4-pole connector when installing a new brake controller in this vehicle? I know I will have to run an additional wire for the controller, but what else needs to be done? Also, which controller would you recommend for this vehicle? Any wiring tips on installing a brake controller under the Terrain dash? Thanks for considering this matter.

Since your 2011 GMC Terrain already has a 4-Way trailer connector, you will just need to use a 4- and 7-Way Installation Kit, # ETBC7. This will provide the 7-Way connector, mounting hardware, and the wiring and circuit breakers needed to install a brake controller.
I have included links to an FAQ and a video that will help you with the installation. The only other part you may need is a circuit tester, # 4PTW2993, unless you already have one.
For a brake controller, I recommend the Tekonsha P2, # 90885. It is our best-selling controller because it is easy to set up and easy to use. I have included a link to the installation details for you.
When mounting the brake controller, you will want it to be within easy reach of the driver. The most common location is on the bottom part of the dash on the right side of the steering wheel. The P2 can be mounted a full 360 degrees in the direction of travel (see instructions for details) so if it has to be facing straight up or down it can be.
