How To Carry a Spare Tire On Top of a Vehicle

Question:

Hello. I prefer to have a Skybox vs. a cargo basket for looks and function. If my factory crossbars can handle the weight, is it okay to carry a spare tire inside of a Yakima Skybox 18 on my roof? I have a 2013 Lexus GX 460 with factory rails and crossbars, but wasnt sure if the Skybox is ridged enough. My spare tire + rim weighs about 65lbs. Thanks.

The Yakima SkyBox 18 Rooftop Cargo Box part # Y07336 is made of a durable ABS plastic and can support weight up to the weight capacity of your vehicle's roof. However, the dimensions of the box are only 92" long x 36" wide x 16" tall which I can't image is going to be sufficient for the spare tire on your 2013 Lexus GX 460. I have never heard of someone installing a spare tire inside of a cargo box before.

I know you said you did not want to use a cargo basket but it will be your only option. For this, I recommend using the Yakima LoadWarrior Roof Rack Cargo Basket part # Y07070-74 with the Spare Tire Carrier for Yakima Roof Cargo Baskets part # Y07076. The dimensions of this basket are 62" long x 39" wide x 6-1/2" tall and it can support weight up to the weight capacity of your vehicle's roof as well.
