Replacing Axle on Trailer to Add Brakes  

Question:

I own a 2006 Triton AUT1064 utility trailer that has a damaged axle Dexter 09072 that needs replacing. Since I have to replace the whole shebang, I figured I would add electric or hydraulic disc brakes to the unit. I tow with a 2014 Mazda6 and a 2015 Jeep, both having a four pin connector. I dont know which braking system, electric or hydraulic is best for my application. I do a lot of backing up with the trailer, so pulling out a pin every time I need to reverse on a surge system doesnt seem practical to me. Can you assist me in putting together a durable package that replaces the non-braking factory components and adds braking capabilities?

Electric brakes are the way to go for lighter duty towing. They are easier to install, work great, cost less, more adjustable, and allow for easy refersing of the trailer. I attached a link to a help article that details exactly what you need to do to convert a trailer without brakes to having brakes.

Since you will be replacing the axle your best option will be to go with an axle that comes with hub drums and electric assemblies already. I attached a link to a page that has all of the axles we offer that come with brakes. You'll want to first know the length of your current axle from hub face to hub face and then also from spring center to spring center and you'll be able to pick out the correct dimension axle.

Then to upgrade the 4-way of the trailer to a 7-way you'll want the upgrade kit part # HS381-9000 along with 10 gauge wire to run to each brake assembly like part # 10-1-1 which is sold by the foot.
