Would it do any good putting snow chains on a 1996 Chevy Express 1500, 5.0L cargo van or is the rear end to light?

Installing tire chains to the rear tires of your 1996 Chevy Express Van 1500 will definitely provide benefit in the form of better traction during snow and ice, even with a lighter rear body. If you live in or travel throughout areas where this type of weather is a concern I do recommend obtaining a pair for when they are needed or required by local law.

If your Chevy Express is equipped with 225/75-16 or 235/75-15 sized tires (the 2 most common sizes on this vehicle) then I highly recommend the Konig Standard Snow Tire Chains # TH01571245. These are excellent D-shape link chains that use integrated rubber tensioners and color-coded connection points to allow for a secure and quick installation. I have included a short video demonstration that you can check out as well.

If you have a different tire size on the van please let me know and I will be happy to make a different recommendation.
