When Measuring Height To Find the Correct Ball Mount Should Load In Tow Vehicle Be Factored In

Question:

I read your instructions on determining the size of the required to have a level trailer. There was no mention of factoring in the load on the back of the towing vehicle. Should that not be factored in? In other words, if the trailer tongue weight plus my in-vehicle load is around 500 pounds and that causes about an inch in hitch height due to spring compression, shouldnt I subtract that from the measured to produce a level loaded trailer?

Normally the load in the rear of the towing vehicle is not factored in when measuring for the correct ball mount, because the load might not be the same each time you will be towing. If the load in the rear of your vehicle will be the same amount each time you will be towing, then you could account for the extra drop in hitch height.

The most important thing when choosing the correct ball mount is to have both the tow vehicle and the trailer level, without a load, when measuring. With the correct ball mount installed in the tow vehicle and the trailer connected, if the load that is added to the tow vehicle and the trailer tongue load causes the tow vehicle to be raised in front, you will want to look into using a weight distribution system.
