Solution for Needing Trailer Lighting that Won't Ground Through Hardware

Question:

My trailer has 3 wires on the left that go to the light assembly. The assembly I took off was broken. I bought a new light assembly which has two wires and states that white wires are not needed as the lamp assembly is grounded through the fasteners I guess. If I connect brown to brown and yellow to yellow...nothing happens. If I connect the white which by the way is brownish black with a white strip on it with the yellow then the turn signals work and the running lights work, but all the running lights blink when the left signal is on. Im guessing its back feeding the circuit. Im blowing the running light fuse in the vehicle too. Ive checked all outputs from my 7 pin connector on the vehicle - they appear to be working correctly. Never had a problem with the vehicle or connection. Should I attempt to attach and run a separate ground lead from the lamp assembly??? Appreciate any help.

Your idea is exactly what I would recommend. The lights ground through the hardware but not all trailers are capable of supporting this so running a jumper wire from the mounting hardware to the ground circuit of the trailer harness's ground is the correct solution.
