Comparing the Curt Spectrum Brake Controller and Redarc Tow-Pro Elite for a 2016 Audi Q5

Question:

Hi: I have a 2016 Audi Q5 TDI with an Audi dealer installed trailer hitch and wiring harness with 7-Pin Socket Part Number 8R0092115. I am considering the Curt Spectrum or Redarc Tow-Pro Elite for my trailer brake controller. Is one or the other better for use on the Audi Q5? The Q5 max tow weight is 4400 lbs, and I plan to be hauling a R Pod 179 travel trailer - 2756 lbs dry weight, 292 lbs hitch weight, 1036 lbs cargo weight.

Both the Curt Spectrum # C51170 and the Redarc Tow-Pro Elite # RED44FR are excellent brake controller options for your 2016 Audi Q5 but in comparison I recommend going with the Tow-Pro Elite over the Spectrum.

Although both controllers can be used as proportional brake controllers (they activate your trailer brakes at the same time and with the same intensity as the brakes on your Q5) the Tow-Pro Elite can also be switched to "User Control" mode which means your trailer brakes will activate at a predetermined time and intensity when your brake pedal is pressed. This gives the Tow-Pro Elite an edge as it can be used for a wide variety of applications.

Aside from that the controllers are pretty similar as you can install them just about anywhere and in such a way that they look like OEM controllers. The only real advantage that the Spectrum has over the Tow-Pro Elite is that it can be mounted with adhesive. I would be a little hesitant to do this though as using the mounting hardware would be more secure.

I have attached review videos for both controllers for you to reference as well. Either way you end up going you will also need the adapter # C51522 which plugs into a port under the driver's side dash on your Q5 since it sounds like you have the factory tow package.
