Recommended Trailer Hitch for 2016 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter 2500 4x4 with 144 Inch Wheelbase
Question:
which hitch for 4x4 sprinter van 2500 Hello, I have a 2016 144 wheelbase 4x4 Mercedes Sprinter. It came with a hitch rated for 5000 pounds and 500 tongue weight. If I want to tow more, is it a matter of buying a 7500 rated hitch, changing my suspension somehow, or simply carrying less weight in the van when I am towing more weight out back? If it is the hitch, which do you recommend? thanks

Your 2016 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter 2500 144 wheelbase 4x4 has a towing capacity of 7500 lbs, so it appears you are limited by your hitch. I recommend the Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver - Custom Fit - Class III - 2" # 13358 which is rated for 5,000 lbs without weight distribution but up to 7, 500 lbs when using a weight distribution system. This hitch does not fit models with 30-3/8 inch frame measured outside to outside of frame, but will work with the factory step bumper.
If you do not have the factory step bumper, then I recommend the Draw-Tite # 75549 which is rated for 6,000 lbs without or 7,500 lbs with a weight distribution system. It also will not fit models with 30-3/8 inch frame measured outside to outside of frame.
If you need a weight distribution system, the biggest thing to consider is the total tongue weight. This is the loaded trailer tongue weight (normally 10-15% of trailer weight) along with any cargo behind the rear axle of the tow vehicle. When choosing a system, you want the total tongue weight to fall in the middle of the range of a system. Systems are listed on our page at their maximum total tongue weight and the range is found about halfway down each product page. I've attached a link to all your options to assist.
