If the Lippert Electric Trailer Jack # LC285318 will not retract then the first thing you will want to do is make sure there is power reaching the jack and it is properly grounded. If you use a circuit tester at the power wire just before it enters the jack that should give you a good idea of whether or not you have a dead battery or there is a short on the power wire. The ground is not so easy to test so I just recommend removing it, sanding down the mounting surface, and attaching with new hardware.

If there is power reaching the jack then remove the extend/retract switch and apply power directly to the retract circuit. If the jack retracts then you know the switch is bad can be replaced. If the jack still does not retract even with power applied directly to the retract circuit then it will need to be replaced because it was most likely overextended. There is a manual override feature in the head that may or may not allow you to still use the jack in the meantime, it just really depends on how bad it is damaged.

For a replacement, I really like the Stromberg Carlson # SC63VR which is rated for 4500 pounds of lift and features a clutch that will prevent damage caused by over extending or retracting the jack foot.
