Does App Need to be Running During Travel on Curt Echo Brake Controller
Question:
does the software need to run at all time to operate or it needs to be lunched for configuration purposes only?

When towing with the Curt Echo Mobile Trailer Brake Controller # C51180 installed I do recommend having the app/software opened up on your phone during travel, however it is not required for proper operation. The ideal setup would be to have the phone mounted in a visible location such as using a dash-mounted bracket like # PC03. This is simply so that you can have access to the manual override button (the large orange circle on the app) if needed.
To more directly answer your question though, the app does not need to be running after the initial pairing process. In fact, your phone doesn't even need to be on (after the initial pairing). The Echo will continue to operate as a proportional brake controller using the most recent settings you applied before turning off the app or your phone. In this scenario you just wouldn't have access to the manual override in an emergency braking situation.
I have attached the written installation instructions that you can also take a look at.
