Recommended High Value Aero Roof Rack for 2017 Mazda 5 for Transporting Kayaks

Question:

We're looking for a roof rack for our 5, a 2017 model year. We have one kayak now and may add a second identical one. The kayak is 24-inches wide and weighs just under 50lbs. We want a good quality rack but we are not stuck on any one brand. We do not need a roof rack with "snob appeal".

The roof rack that offers a great mix of quality and features along with excellent value for the dollar is Rhino-Rack's Vortex Aero system. We have one of these excellent roof racks for each of the two types of roof that can be found on the 2017 Mazda 5. These roof styles are either a bare roof with fixed mounting points or a roof with raised side rails that run front-to-back.

If your Mazda 5 has the bare roof you'll want to order parts # RRVA118B-2, # RRRLKVA and # DK285. If instead it has the raised side rails you will use parts # RRVA118B-2 and # RRSX100.
Both racks offer a high 165-lb weight capacity.

Either way you get a quality roof rack with sleek lightweight aerodynamic black crossbars that make less noise than all other shapes and that allow you to mount two types of accessories, both those that clamp around the bars and those that mount in the channel in the top of the bars.

For some examples, the Malone SaddleUp Pro Kayak Carrier # MPG1001 has T-bolts (shown in the linked photo) that slide right into the channels in the Vortex bars; while the clamp-around Rhino-Rack Nautic kayak carrier # RR570 uses hardware that wraps around the Vortex bars. The kayak carrier you referenced in your question, the Thule Stacker # TH830, also fits on the Vortex bars and can handle up to 4 kayaks.
