Availability of a Trailer Hitch for a 2012 Toyota Highlander with a 17 Inch Spare Tire
Question:
The installation notes on the Draw-Tite Trailer Hitch #75586 says: Fits with mini spare tire stowed under vehicle, but will not fit with full size spare. Will they fit with full-size spare tire on 17-inch wheel which I have on my 2012 Highlander? Does the Toyota OEM receiver hitch have the receiver located under the bottom of the rear bumper or located in the bumper plastic? My 2012 Highlander does not appear to have a cutout in the rear bumper plastic like the 2011 or earlier year models to house the hitch receiver.

Draw-Tite hitch # 75586 will fit with a 17 inch spare tire on your 2012 Toyota Highlander. I could not say where the Toyota factory hitch is located, but the hitches we carry have the receiver below the rear fascia as you can see in the instructions I have included.
If you plan on doing some towing with the hitch, I recommend the etrailer Ball Mount Kit, # 989900. It comes with two ball mounts, two balls, a hitch pin with clip, and a carrying bag. For wiring, use the Tow Ready Custom Fit Vehicle Wiring, # 118449. I have included a link to the installation details and a video showing a typical installation.
