Trailer Wiring Recommendation for 2013 Dodge Durango RT that Doesn't Require Dealer Activation

Question:

I had a harnes adapter installed on my Dodge Durango RT 2013. The lights would not work. We later find out that you have to take it to dealership to get that feature “ activated”. Is this true! Is there a way to bypass that? The dealership is charging me $183.00 to activate that feature.
