Best Weight Distribution System for a 28 Foot Haulmark Enclosed Trailer

Question:

Please recommend load/sway control unit. 2006 Dodge Ram 3500 4x4 DRW quad cab Cummins diesel, 12.2K GVW. 28 ft Haulmark box trailer, electric brakes, 10K GVW, Dexter torsion axles, estimated 600-1400 lb tongue weight. No sway issues in 14K miles but I might have been lucky.

If the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of your Haulmark Enclosed Trailer is 10,000 lbs then I can estimate that the tongue weight will be at most between 1,000 lbs and 1,500 lbs if properly loaded . You are also going to want to add the weight of any cargo stored behind the rear axle of the tow vehicle when choosing a weight distribution system.

Therefore, I recommend taking a look at the Strait-Line Weight Distribution w Sway Control part # RP66130 which is rated for a total tongue weight between 800 lbs and 1,500 lbs. This is actually one of the best weight distribution systems on the market in my opinion. Although you may not see a direct need for sway control now, I can almost guarantee there will be instances where you wish you had it such as areas with high winds and sudden maneuvering.

In order to use this system you will need a hitch ball part # C40030 (2-5/16") and a shank part # RP54970 (6-1/2" drop). You will also need part # RP58305 if the frame rails on your trailer exceed 2-1/2" wide.

I have attached a review video for you as well
