Recommended Replacement Brake Controller for Old Time Delayed Unit on 2011 GMC Sierra 1500
Question:
the trailer brakes seem to grab even with the sync all the rearward. When the brake are released they feel like they slam open and jerk the entire unit. We are towing a 22 foot travel trailer with a 2011 GMC Sierra 1500 which we just purchased the brake controller was in the truck, the only number on the unit is T196. Also I hardly feel any resistance when moving it. Thank You

The Reese Brakeman is an old style time delayed controller that has been discontinued. When the brake pedal is released, the trailer brakes are released immediately with all brake controllers, so something in the way the controller is operating is an issue.
My recommendation is upgrade your brake controller to a proportional brake controller to allow the braking to be in sync with your vehicle braking. The most popular option is the Tekonsha Prodigy P3 # 90195 which will simply replace your current controller with a simple plug in or if you don't have the harness, it can be matched color for color with your current unit. This controller has an integrated sensor for deceleration so it will apply your trailer brakes in proportion to your vehicle. It also has 3 preset boost settings based on trailer size and it has an LCD screen to help you know the diagnostics.
I've attached a couple videos to assist.
