How to Find Towing Weight Rating for 2004 Dodge Ram 2500 6-1/2 Bed and Recommended 5th Wheel Hitch
Question:
I have a short bed 2004 dodge ram 2500 4x4 with the hemi. I am curious what towing capacity it has for a fifth wheel trailer and whether or not I need a sliding hitch or replacement pin box.

I wasn't able to find the towing capacity of your 2004 Dodge Ram 2500 4x4 online but I can give you some options on how to find it.
You should be able to locate the towing weight ratings in your copy of the owner's manual, by contacting your nearest Dodge dealer with your VIN, or by adding the curb weight of your pickup (weight when no cargo or passengers are present) plus the weight of any passengers or cargo that you plan on towing with and then subtracting that total number from your GCWR (Gross Combined Weight Rating) which can be found on a sticker on your driver's side door jamb. The resulting number is the max weight of a trailer you can tow.
When it comes to picking out a 5th wheel hitch for your pickup we do have quite a few options to choose from. I recommend installing the B&W Gooseneck Hitch # BWGNRK1313-5W and then using the Companion 5th wheel hitch. The gooseneck hitch not only provides an easy connection point for your Companion hitch but it also allows you to have a clear bed when you aren't towing and you need to haul something in your bed.
The gooseneck hitch # BWGNRK1313-5W that I referenced is compatible with both a 6-1/2' bed and an 8' bed but the Companion that you use will depend on what size bed you have. Since you have a 6-1/2' bed you want to use the sliding version # BWRVK3400-5W so that you have adequate turning clearance to keep from hitting your cab with your trailer. The Companion has a 20,000 lb weight rating.
If you already have standard base rails installed in the bed of your Dodge Ram then I recommend going with the B&W Patriot # BWRVK3270 for your short bed. This are essentially the same as the Companion but it has a different base that is compatible with the standard base rails. The Patriot is rated for 18,000 lbs.
I also recommend installing a 7-Way connector like part # HM42137 which makes connecting and disconnecting the wiring of your 5th wheel hitch much easier. I have attached some review videos for these hitches that you can check out.
