Recommended Bumper Hitch and Sliding 5th Wheel Hitch for 2006 Ford Super Duty
Question:
Help me Mr. Wizard. I just bought a 2006 Ford SuperDuty Crew Cab with 6 3/4 bed for towing an RV. Im in the market for either a fifth wheel hitch or a regular bumper pull. I might go to a bumper pull if the cost to lower the vehicle and the fifth wheel hitch is high versus the bumper pull. The vehicle was raised by the previous owner although I dont know what the lift is. Im concerned about dragging the tail end of a fifth wheel against the pavement. Our new accessory for the cab is a step stool for Grandma so she can get in. Can you help Grandma out too?

Mr. Wizard is currently out of the office on a long weekend but I'd be more than happy to make some recommendations for you. I should start by saying a bumper pull trailer hitch is definitely going to cost less than adding a fifth wheel hitch but I'll give you options for both so you can make an informed decision about what you want to do.
For a trailer hitch on your 2006 Ford F-250 or F-350 Super Duty I recommend checking out the Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver # C15410 which is a Class V hitch with a 2" receiver that has a maximum towing capacity of 17,000 lbs and maximum tongue weight capacity of 2,550 lbs (though you will need to go by your Ford's towing capacity if it is less than this). This hitch is not going to require any drilling into your new truck's frame to install and will fit your truck even if it has a 20 inch or smaller spare tire underneath.
This is the best option for a bumper pull trailer but if you decide to go with a fifth wheel hitch I recommend checking out the Reese 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch w/ Square Tube Slider # RP30051. If you take a look at the accompanying diagram you can see the measurements you will need to ensure you are able to tow your fifth wheel level.
To mount this sliding hitch in your truck bed the most economical option is the Reese Universal Base Rails and Installation Kit for 5th Wheel Trailer Hitches # RP30035; I have added a link to a video showing the rails being installed on a Ford Super Duty for you to check out.
As for helping Grandma out, I'd be honored (she undoubtedly deserves it) but I wasn't quite clear if you were looking for something like Folding Step Stool # TE97FR, you already had one or were seeking other options.
Just to be on the safe side so Grandma gets the help she deserves I recommend checking out the Carr Custom-Fit Side Step # CARR124871-1 which not only has a 6" drop but is also large at 17" long x 5" wide with a non-slip tread for added safety.
Another option for something a little bit smaller at 14" wide x 4" deep and with a 5" drop there is the Carr LD Custom Fit Side Steps # CARR114871. These also have very good tread on them and extend out a couple inches more than most steps.
I've added links to some videos for you to check out as well as a link to a help article on fifth wheel towing which should be useful.
