Why Are Some Bike Racks Rated for Use Behind 5th Wheel and Some Not

Question:

What makes some bike racks better for a back mount on a 42 ft fifth wheel with compared against the Swagman XTC-2 #S64670?

As you are seeing, only certain hitch-mounted bike racks are rated for use behind a fifth-wheel trailer. This is simply because of the extra movement and bounce that a bike rack has to withstand behind a trailer as compared to when it's mounted behind a standard passenger vehicle.

As for what specifically makes the approved racks for 5th wheel use, different from the Swagman XTC-2 # S64670 that is not really just comes down to its particular design and what the manufacturer has deemed safe for the rack. They have tested the approved carriers behind a trailer and found that it can be safely used in this application because of its sturdy yet lightweight construction. Swagman on the other hand has said that the XTC-2 bike rack will not be covered under warranty if it is used behind a trailer because of the damage it may cause over time. The rack simply isn't built to withstand the abuse it would take when mounted behind a trailer. The carrier could fail and cause great damage to your equipment and could be dangerous.

I recommend taking a look at the Swagman Dispatch # S44FR. This platform-style rack can handle 2 bikes of up to 45 pounds each and it is tested and rated for use behind a fifth-wheel trailer. This rack features a solid steel construction that will hold up great. Locks are also included to secure everything into place and help deter theft. However, this carrier, and all of our bike carriers that are currently approved for use behind a 5th wheel used a 2" hitch connection. (May 2022)

I have attached a short video demonstration on this bike rack that you can check out as well.
