When you use an adapter to join a vehicle's 4-pole wiring to a trailer's 7-way wiring, an item like # 37185, only the basic lighting functions from the 4-pole setup will reach the trailer unless you make more circuit connections. Those additional functions are trailer brakes, reverse lights and 12V trailer power. Those extra circuit connections can be seen in the linked photo of 37185 which has pigtail leads for making those three additional functions.
If you already have a 4-pole harness on the van, one like Curt # C56020, you can convert this to a 7-way and also install a trailer brake controller too using one kit, part # ETBC7. The kit has all the parts needed (including adapter part # 37185) to both completely wire a 7-way socket and to install a trailer brake controller such as the excellent Prodigy P3 # 90195.
I linked both an article and a video showing installation of the # ETBC7 kit in a Ford van like yours.
