Recommended Trailer Hitch and Cargo Carrier for 2005 Honda Accord

Question:

Can you please tell me if: 1 I believe the two legs of the receiver attach directly to the frame of the accord... yes? 2 It is difficult to see, but there seems to be another bolt connection where the two legs come together at the Y... does this bolt onto the accord? Is there any other changes / adjustments to make to the accord for this third bolted connection? Or will this unit all 2005 accords for this third bolted connection? 3 This has a 1 1/4 square fitting - I do not seem to be able to identify a basket to connect to the receiver that has this measurement - they all have a 2inch fitting. Will an adapter work? Will there be any kind of safety issue if I an adapter between the receive and the basket? Thank you very much

The Draw-Tite Sportframe Trailer Hitch Receiver # 24787 that you referenced is confirmed to fit your 2005 Honda Accord.

The two mounting arms of the hitch will indeed bolt directly to the vehicle's frame rails using existing holes for a no-drill installation. Other than these two bolt hole locations on the hitch, the only other attachment point is above the hitch receiver where it will attach to the vehicle's tie-down loop with a single carriage bolt and clamping block (along with a washer and nut). I have attached an image from the installation instructions that might help clarify how the hitch installed on the vehicle. If you have the V6 model the heat shields will require that a hole be drilled so that you can access the frame rails. Otherwise no modifications need to be made to the vehicle.

There are indeed many more hitch-mounted accessories available that are compatible with 2 inches as opposed to smaller 1-1/4 inch receivers, however we do have a nice selection of cargo baskets that are directly compatible with 1-1/4 inch hitches. I have attached a link that will take you directly to this selection. I really like the Reese Cargo Carrier # 63155, which features raised side rails to help keep cargo in place and a nice mesh floor that is easy to clean. It has inside dimensions of 47 inches long and 20 inches wide. I have attached a short video demonstration that you can check out as well.

It is possible to use a cargo carrier that is designed for 2 inch hitch receivers with a 1-1/4 inch receiver by using an adapter like the Brophy # HTAD. Keep in mind though that using an adapter like this will reduce the hitch's tongue weight capacity by 50 percent. This means the 200 pound tongue weight limit on the Draw-Tite hitch will be reduced to 100 pounds when using the adapter. Depending on how much weight you plan on loading into the carrier (while also noting that the carrier weight itself needs to be factored in) this may not be the best option.
