Ball Mount For Factory Class IV Hitch Has Play on 2011 Dodge Ram Big Horn
Question:
I have a 2011 Dodge Ram Big Horn with a factory Class IV Hitch. Is it correct using a 2 x 2 receiver. It seems to have a little play versus a tight fit. I also used a 5/8 pin. Is that correct. Thanks

With a Class IV Hitch, you should have a 2 x 2 receiver. You should be using a ball mount designed for 2 inch receivers like the Draw-Tite Ball Mount, part # 40331 or the B&W # BWBMHD30010.
The ball mount will have some play when mounted to the hitch because of the difference in tolerances between the shank of the ball mount and the receiver opening. Both may be within specs but up to a certain tolerance, one may be within the tolerance but on the high side, and the other in spec on the low side.
Yes, you will want to use a 5/8 inch hitch pin, like Hitch Pin, part # PC3.
A solution to eliminate the play and rattle in the ball mount, would be to use an anti-rattle, locking ball mount like the Diversi-Tech Ball Mount, part # DTLBM9200. You would need to measure to determine the correct rise or drop you will need (see FAQ).
Checkout the short video I produced for you showing a Class IV hitch, ball mount, and locking anti-rattle ball mount. I have also linked an FAQ on hitch sizes and an FAQ on determining the correct ball mount.
