Weight Distribution Recommendation for 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee Towing Trailer with 700 lb TW

Question:

2014 Jeep GC with 5.7 V8, tow package, electronic sway controller. 7,200 lbs. tow capacity and 720 tongue weight. 114.7inch wheel base. Trailer: 22, dual axle, 3,705 lbs dry wt. 7,000 lbs. GVWR We are targeting 80 to 85 GVW 5,600 to 5,960 lbs and less than 100 lbs behind the jeeps rear axle. So, about 700 lbs tongue wt. Mountain road towing. Need easy backup hitch and dont want too stiff of a ride when towing. What hitch do we need? 2 or 4 point? 10,000 lbs rating or less?

The best way to pick out a weight distribution system is to base it off of the loaded tongue weight of the setup when it is loaded and ready to tow. This figure also includes the weight of any cargo behind the rear axle of the tow vehicle. I attached a help article on determining tongue weight for you to check out as well. You will want the loaded tongue weight of your setup to fall right in the middle of the tongue weight range of the system you use.

Since Reese is the only company that uses spring steel for their spring bars they will give the best ride quality. So for a system that would work great with 700 lbs of tongue weight the Strait-Line system part # RP66083 would be perfect. It has a tongue weight range of 400-800 lbs and features the best sway control that works to prevent sway. This is far superior to friction based sway control. As long as you are backing up mainly straight you'd be fine to leave the system installed too.

For a 2 inch ball you would want part # A-90 and for a 2-5/16 inch ball # 19286.
