Best Slider Fifth Wheel Hitch Recommendation for 2004 Dodge Ram 3500

Question:

I have a 2004 Dodge ram 3500 short box 4x4 pu. I just purchased a grand design reflection 337rls. What is the best options on hitches? We plan to drive the Alaskan Alcan highway and we stay in areas that I may have to hookup or unhook at an angle. I understand some hitches can only hookup backing straight in line. I have been told a Curt hitch is great as is a Reese. I am trying to not get too heavy of a hitch because it will limit my load capacity in my pickup. Can you give me your three or four best options and give me the pros and cons to them?

Since your 2004 Dodge Ram 3500 is a short bed you will need a slider hitch to allow you to make tight turns. Since you will have to hitch up at an angle occasionally that means you won't be able to use an automatic sliding hitch.

The Curt A16 slider part number # C16521 with the custom install kit part # C16420-204 would be a great choice. Not too heavy and a solid choice for a hitch with a custom install rail kit.

The Reese 20k Slider hitch part # RP30083 is one of my favorite choices. It has a better jaw design than the Curt in my opinion and will be long term more reliable we've found. The custom rail kit for this then is the # RP50140-58.

Most RVers refer to the B and W Companion hitches like the slider part # BWRVK3400 as the nicest around. They are incredibly reliable, super quiet, and will last a very long time. The custom install rail kit for your truck then would be the part # BWGNRK1313. Upside to this rail kit is that it's underbed so you'd have a totally open truck bed when the hitch isn't installed and it doubles as a gooseneck hitch too.
