Installation of Tekonsha OEM Replacement Vehicle Wiring Harness with Brake Controller Adapter #22117
Question:
IF IM NOT USING BRAKE CONTROLLER,DO I NEED TO RUN RED WIRE TO BATTERY?

On the Tekonsha OEM Replacement Vehicle Wiring Harness w Brake Controller Adapter - 7 Way Trailer Connector # 22117 you do need to run the red wire to the battery. That gives power to your towing harness so that the turn/stop and running light functions all work properly. The Black wire also needs to be run to the battery as that gives the 12V power function to your 7-way 12V pin. The only wiring from the harness that does not need to be run is the Blue wire to the brake control harness and the Black wire between the battery and the brake control harness since you aren't using the brake controller. I personally recommend wiring them anyway so you have the option at a later time.
I've attached a diagram to assist for your 2016 - 2018 Toyota Tacoma.
