Availability of Class II Trailer Hitch for 2011 Ford Mustang

Question:

I want a class 2 hitch for my mustang, but they arent available. The load rating is different between 1 and 2, but what is actually different?? Is it the physical strength? What happens if I tow 3000 lbs with a class one hitch? Will it break?? Will a class two hitch technically bolt up on my mustang??

All of the trailer hitches available for your 2011 Ford Mustang are Class I rated hitches. There is not a Class II hitch available that will fit your Mustang.

Trailer hitches are custom-fit for specific vehicles, meaning that most will use existing holes in the vehicle's frame for installation. This means that you would not be able to install a Class II hitch, which would be designed for a different vehicle, on your 2011 Ford Mustang. Since hitches are designed for certain vehicles, they will also usually feature the same general capacities as the vehicle it is designed to fit. This is likely why there isn't a Class II hitch available for your Mustang, as the vehicle itself cannot handle the heavier weights that a Class II hitch offers.

I did take a look at the online owner's manual for your 2011 Ford Mustang and found that the vehicle has a towing capacity of just 1,000 pounds. This is the limit you will need to follow even if the trailer hitch features a higher rating.

Class I and Class II hitches are different in terms of their construction and rated appropriately. Exceeding the limits of a Class I hitch can certainly lead to damage.

For your Mustang, I recommend the Draw-Tite Sportframe Trailer Hitch Receiver # 24863. This Class I hitch will use existing holes in the vehicle's frame for a no-drill installation. I have attached an installation video that you can use for reference.

If you do decide to do some light-duty towing, you will also need a trailer wiring harness. I recommend the Tekonsha T-One # 118487. This custom harness will install by simply plugging into factory ports behind the driver and passenger side tail lights (inside the trunk). Once the connections are made you will run the hot lead up to the vehicle's battery. This will provide you with a 4-Way connector to connect with and power a trailer's basic signal lights.

For a ball mount you can use the Draw-Tite Drawbar # 3594 with a compatible hitch ball like the 2 inch # 19258 or the 1-7/8 inch # 19256.
