Do Tail Lights on 2017 Jeep Compass Need to be Removed to Install 4-Way Wiring Kit

Question:

Hi, so we have a Trailhawk jeep compass 2017 model with a hitch. wanted to add a hitch cargo basket. Was reading your site a bit. Watched a video. So I am amazed....is the only way to connect for lights by unscrewing and removing the tail lights for connections??? This seems totally crazy. If I dont obstruct the lights with cargo are reflectors sufficient? Long drive from NJ to Blacksburg VA. Dont want to get pulled over. I would have expected there is simply a connector under the car by the hitch itself? With all the new car technology, all manner of sensors for cross traffic, blindspot, frontal crash detection...USB connectors, other power connectors, etc....mind boggling that an easily accessible connector for this would not be available. Our hitch was installed by dealer. There is no way I am removing my tail lights. Would prefer hitch cargo basket to rooftop for loading.

If you don't already have a 4-Way connector on your 2017 Jeep Compass and your cargo will be covering the lights on your Compass then I do recommend installing a 4-Way. Since you already have a trailer hitch a hitch mount cargo carrier would be much more easy to use that piling your cargo on your roof.

For an "Old Style" Compass (11th letter of VIN is D) I recommend the T-One # 118539 but if you have a "New Style" (11th letter of the VIN is T) I recommend the Curt T-Connector # C56369. Although you will need to pull out your tail lights for the installation there is no splicing required so that is one less thing to worry about. There is also a hot lead that needs to run to your battery to send power to the 4-Way. This ensures that whatever is drawing power won't ruin the wiring on your Compass if something were to happen to the wiring that is drawing power.

I know this is a little more than what you are wanting but it really is the best way when using a carrier like part # 59502 with cargo covering your lights. For a light kit I recommend the part # 20174.

Attached is a sample installation video as well as the instructions. If you don't feel comfortable performing this install a trusted shop should be able to easily install the kit for you.

If you are really opposed to the installation then the only other option would be to put your cargo on the roof. This will require a roof rack if you don't already have one. Let me know if this is the case and I can make some recommendations for you.
