A Torque Wrench is Required to Tighten Bolts on a Draw-Tite Trailer Hitch for a 2011 Dodge Caliber

Question:

I have a 2011 Dodge Caliber and would like to purchase the Draw-Tite Trailer Hitch 24769 and install it myself.I want to haul bikes. I have a question on how to tighten the bolts yourself. It says You want to check with the directions to verify the specified torque rating for each individual bolt.inch The rating is 100. I do not own a torque wrench so how do I tighten it so all is safe when I put the real weight on the hitch. Can I use a socket wrench?? Safety is always a first with me. I do not want to damage anything by not having enough information as to what is a must to have it done right, Any help with this question.

If you do not have a torque wrench you will need to get one or borrow one. Many auto parts stores will loan out tools. I needed a tap and die set and was able to borrow one from a local auto parts chain. You will want to follow the torque specs as specified in the instructions which I have linked for reference. I have also included a link to a video showing a typical installation.

You can use a socket wrench for initial tightening of the bolts, but to get them to the correct torque specs, you must have a torque wrench. There is no other way to make sure you get the bolts tightened correctly. If the bolts are too loose the hitch will not be properly supported on the vehicle frame. Too tight and you can damage the hitch and vehicle frame.

Since you want to carry bikes with the hitch, you should know that on a Class I trailer hitch like this one, you are limited to carrying 2 bikes. You will want to make sure that the bike rack you choose is rated for use on a Class I trailer hitch. The reason you are limited to 2 bikes is because more than 2 bikes puts too much weight too far from the trailer hitch and it cannot handle the torque.

For a bike rack, I recommend the Swagman Trailhead, # S63360. This bike rack will fit a Class I hitch, has anti-sway cradles, and can tilt down for greater access to the rear of the vehicle. I have included a link to the installation details for you.
