Can Rhino-Rack RTC-Style Roof Rack Tracks Install at an Angle?

Question:

Hi there, I purchased a set of Rhino Rack RTC tracks RTC14 for my Snugtop short bed camper shell. I have been reading a lot about avoiding the center honeycomb structure of the camper shell when bolting the tracks down. However, it looks like the roof of my camper shell is pretty curved and gets more so right at the end of the honeycomb section. Maybe the honeycomb section is wider on this shell than most? If I do install the tracks on the outside edge of the honeycomb the plumb line of the tracks are then not vertical. Does the way the quick mount legs attach the track make up for the angle? If so, what do you think the maximum angle would be before the leg is putting pressure against the edge of the base? Thanks so much!!

Expert Reply:

The Rhino-Rack RTC-Style Roof Rack Tracks # RTC14 do need to lay flat. There cannot be an angle because that would cause an undue amount of stress on your camper shell, the tracks, and the legs. To safely and effectively use the rack you are going to need to do it so the tracks are laid down flat or they could very easily snap off or come apart because they'll be constantly flexed.
