Can Trunk-Mounted Bike Racks Allow Trunk to Open When on?

Question:

Hi, I have a 2017 VW Atlas. I’m trying to figure out if this or another rack will allow me to open my trunk while it is on my vehicle with the bikes secured as well? Sorry if this is a dumb question!! All new to me, but for trips I know I will need to at times access the contents of my trunk and don’t see taking the bikes off every time. Thanks!

It is not a dumb question at all but the answer may disappoint you because no trunk-mounted bike rack, including the Saris Bones # SA805BL will allow you to open the trunk of your VW Atlas.

What you will need is a trailer hitch, and the Draw-Tite # 76176 is the best option. It will allow you to mount a bike rack which will tilt down with the bikes loaded, and I recommend the Swagman Dispatch # S44FR because it has a long shank that will give you the best opportunity to open the hatch on your Atlas when you tilt the rack down.

We have not tested it on an Atlas so while I cannot guarantee it will allow you to open your hatch, the Draw-Tite hitch does measure about 5" from its hitch pin hole to the edge of your bumper and the Dispatch measures 12" from the hitch pin hole to the closest part of the carrier. This means you will be able to open the rear hatch of your Atlas at least somewhat; if you measure how far your hatch extends past your bumper when you are opening it, that should give you a better idea as to if you will be able to open the hatch fully with the Dispatch installed.
