Random Codes on the Pilot 2-6 Brake Electronic Brake Controller Part # 80550

Question:

My brake box was working perfectly yesterday. This morning, the controller was reading different things. It read L.0, E.2, H.1, and when turned all the way down, it read 9.2. It felt as if the brakes were engaging while traveling, but you can not adjust the dial to set the brake range. A whole bunch of random numbers and readings would pop up.

I was not able to reference the different codes you were seeing on your Pilot 2-6 Brake Electronic Brake Controller part # 80550 using the owner's manual. In order to test the brake controller I recommend severing the blue brake output wire 6" back from the controller. Once this is done you would then need to turn the gain and boost (if equipped) settings up to the highest number. After the settings are set to the max output you would then need to use a multimeter like part # PT89ZR and test the blue wire from the controller with only the manual override engaged, there should be 12 volts when the manual override is engaged and none when it is not. I would also make sure to check both the ground, power, and stop light wires that lead from the controller to the vehicle.

If the controller fails the above test then it will be time to replace which would allow for a much better option in the Tekonsha Voyager Trailer Brake Controller part # 39510. This is a proportional brake controller that automatically adjusts the trailer's braking based on the deceleration of the tow vehicle. There will be no delay in braking as you have seen with your Pilot.
