E1 Error Code on Hopkins Brake Controller Trailer Brakes Come On Full No Matter Controller Setting

Question:

Im getting a e1 code all the time, but when I hit the brake pedal the trailer brakes lock up. If I use the over ride button I can make it work slower but as soon as I hit the brake its like the controler is set to full power. Its a new controler and new 7 way pug on the truck and the trailer is only 5 months old. 7 x 14 rock solid inclosed trailer. This is the same no matter what setting of power the controler is set at

The E1 error code on Hopkins brake controllers usually indicates that a trailer is not connected. But what you are describing sounds more like the E2 error code which would be a short on the blue wire which is output to the trailer brakes. The most likely cause of this is another circuit making contact with the brake output circuit.

You can check inside the new 7-Way where the wires attach and see if any of the wires are touching the brake output pin (in the 7 o'clock position if looking at where the wires attach). Otherwise inspect the wiring from the 7-Way forward under the vehicle and fix any pinched or damaged wiring.

What is the year, make, and model of the vehicle? There may be something with the vehicle itself that is the root cause of the issue.

I have included some links on testing and troubleshooting brake controllers for you as well.
