Troubleshooting Trailer Side Wiring Connection With Smaller Holes

Question:

I recently purchased a Hopkins 7-way trailer plug for my 2001 Chevy pickup. Once installed which was very easy thank you. The trailer end of the plug the male adapter seems to have smaller holes that dont fit the blades properly. Is that a possibility? Lights do come on but plug does not seem to go in all the way

I'm glad the new Hopkins 7-way was an easy installation. The apparent difference in size of the connector on your trailer is odd as the blades and corresponding connections are industry standard size. It is possible that your trailer doesn't have the industry standard connector, but that would be odd. The only other thing that would cause a connector to not fit is if there is corrosion built up on the inside of the trailer wiring connector. You may want to take a look at that possibility and clean out your connector.

I recommend first attempting to clean that connector and then if needed to replace it with the Hopkins 7-Way RV Style Connector with Molded Cable - Trailer End - 8' Long # H20046 or the Epicord 7-Way Molded Trailer Plug with Junction Box - 10' Long # 277-000141 with ring terminals # 44-5310A. Then to prevent corrosion, use some dielectric grease # 11755 on the connections to keep dirt and moisture out.

The trailer wiring being connected properly is a safety issue, so I do recommend ensuring your wiring is a correct fit.
