Recommended Cargo Carrier for 2015 Mazda3 Hatchback

Question:

We have a 2015 mazda3 hatchback that we are using on an upcoming road trip and are looking into towing/carrier options. We have been looking at a folding hitch cargo carrier e.g. #C18153, but aren’t sure what parts we would need or if this would even work for our car note: we do not have a hitch currently attached to the vehicle. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

You can use a cargo carrier with your 2015 Mazda3 hatchback but it will need to be a fixed carrier and not a folding carrier. The reason for that is the only trailer hitch that fits your '15 Mazda3 is a Class I hitch that requires the stability that a fixed carrier offers as opposed to a folding carrier.

For a hitch I recommend the Draw-Tite # 24914 which fits your hatchback and is a Class I hitch with a 1-1/4" receiver and 200 lb tongue weight capacity. What this means is the combined weight of your cargo carrier and gear cannot weigh more than 200 lbs.

The cargo carrier I recommend for you is the Curt # C18145, which is compatible with Class I hitches and weighs just 29 lbs, leaving you with 171 lbs of gear you can add. It comes with an anti-rattle hitch bolt but you can add Locking Anti-Rattle Pin # S64029 for added security.

For a cargo bag that works with this carrier I recommend etrailer # e98990, which gives you 9 cubic feet of storage space and has 6 straps which will allow you to tie it onto the Curt cargo carrier.

If the cargo bag blocks your taillights you will need to add Light Kit # 98174LED which you would mount with Brackets # BK70BB. This kit would plug into the 4-pole on your Mazda3, which you need to install with part # HM11141824 if it has LED taillights or part # C56175 if it does not have LED taillights.
