Can the Stop Light Switch Wire on a 1989 Ford F-250 Be Used for a Brake Controller

Question:

I purchased a p3 brake controller from you folks a couple weeks ago. I plan to use it on a 1989 3/4 Ton Ford F250 with anti lock brakes. I have not had time to install it yet. I ran across this Generic information. Is this a valid concern for my application. SPECIAL INSTRUCTION FOR 1989-91 FORD E AND F SERIES TRUCKS AND VANS WITH ANTI-LOCK BRAKES - DO NOT CONNECT TO STOPLIGHT SWITCH ON THESE VEHICLES LIGHT GREEN WIRE TURN SIGNAL HARNESS CONNECTOR UNDER DASH NEAR STEERING COLUMN SPLICE STOPLIGHT WIRE TO LIGHT GREEN WIRE. Please advise. Thanks, Victor Stianchi.

I spoke to my contact at Tekonsha and they were aware of the issue you described however, this information only really applies to older brake controllers that draw a lot of power. The Tekonsha Prodigy P3 Trailer Brake Controller part # 90195 draws very little power from the vehicle's wiring and will work fine for you while hooking up to the stop light switch wire. If you do use an older brake controller that draws substantial power then you will just want to tap into the stop light switch wire further down in the wiring harness.

Please note that in order to find the correct stop light switch wire you will want to use a circuit tester.
