The instructions for the CURT Class III 2 Inch Hitch, part # 13322, say to remove the spare tire temporarily to install the hitch on your 2011 Chevrolet Silverado. It is for easier access to the most forward bolts on the hitch and in case you will need to move the hitch around when lining the holes up and attaching the bolts. I am including a link to the installation instructions on the CURT hitch.

We have two video installations of this CURT hitch. One is installed on a 2010 Chevrolet Silverado and we do remove the spare tire temporarily for easier access and the other video is the hitch being installed on a 2008 Silverado and we leave the spare tire in place and install the hitch. I am including links to both installation videos.

We also have some reviews on the CURT hitch and some customers have said that they installed the hitch without removing the spare tire. It will probably just depend on how the spare tire is positioned on your vehicle to know if the hitch can be installed without removing the spare tire.

Removing the spare tire to install the hitch is only temporary. Once the hitch is installed the spare tire is put back in its location.
