Best Brake Controllers for a 2018 Toyota Tacoma TRD with Tow Package

Question:

I need a brake controller for my 2018 Toyota Tacoma TRD. Sport with rhe towing package. I will occasionally be towing a combined load of about 3500 lbs with electric drum brakes on one axle Dexter of a two axle trailer in some mountainous terrain. I am overwhelmed by the number of contollers. I have never towed a trailer with brakes before. Would recommend one or two that fit my needs.

There are a lot of brake controllers out there but no worries; I will recommend some that are going to work the best for your towing needs and 2018 Toyota Tacoma.

Since you have not used a brake controller before I recommend something that is easy to use and understand. For that the best option is the P3 # 90195. This controller has a display that actually tells you in words if there is a fault of some kind. Other controllers have codes you have to look up. The P3 also allows you to set up the controller for different trailers should the need arise. Since your Tacoma has the towing package you can just plug the controller right into your truck using harness # 3031-P. The separate white ground wire will need to attach to a bare metal surface.

For a more budget-friendly controller I recommend the Primus IQ # TK90160. It also uses harness # 3031-P to plug into your truck. This is a good controller but lacks most of the bells and whistles on the P3. It does have a display but if there is a fault of some kind it will give you a code that you would need to look up in its manual. If you keep the manual with the truck though it is not that big of a deal.

And for a third option we have the Autowbrake # 3430001. This controller mounts on the trailer and wires into the 7-Way trailer wiring. It includes a wireless FOB so you can make some adjustments or manually activate the trailer brakes. You will have fewer options in terms of braking sensitivity but also you won't have to worry about mounting a controller in the truck cab.

These are all proportional brake controllers. This means that they will apply the trailer brakes in proportion to how much the tow vehicle is braking. This is the safest way to stop and it reduces wear and tear on both the tow vehicle and the trailer. I have linked videos on all 3 controllers and included a link to our overview of brake controllers for you.
