Benefit of Class III Trailer Hitch on 2018 Subaru Crosstrek

Question:

for 1 2018 subaru crosstrek, it is recommend a class 3 trailer hitch. However, this vehicle only have a 1500lb towing capacity. Is class 3 a over kill?

The benefit of having a Class III hitch on your 2018 Subaru Crosstrek such as the Curt # C13382 is that these hitches have a 2" receiver, which will give you more - and better - options in terms of usable accessories such as a bike rack or cargo carrier than if you had a hitch with a 1-1/4" receiver like the Class II Draw-Tite # 36644.

Just as a reminder, a hitch with a larger towing capacity will not increase the amount your '18 Crosstrek can tow, it will still be 1,500 lbs. If you are going to tow, you need Wiring Harness # 118467 which will give you a 4-flat connector to power your trailer's lights. I also recommend checking out Ball Mount Kit # 989900, which is for 2” hitches and may fulfill your towing needs in one tidy package; two ball mounts - one with a 3/4” rise or 2” drop and the other with a 2-3/4” rise or 4” drop - a 1-7/8” hitch ball, a 2” hitch ball, and a pin and clip.
