The Tow Ready Wiring Kit # 119176KIT that you referenced will work on your 2004 Mercury Grand Marquis. This unit features a circuit protected modulite that safeguards your vehicle from any harmful electrical shorts and should not cause any problems on your vehicle. Basically, it will power your trailer tail lights with power coming straight from your vehicle battery and will not put any load on the delicate tail light circuitry of your vehicle.
I attached installation instructions for this product for you to check out, and an installation video that shows this product being installed onto a vehicle.
