According to the installation instructions for CURT Trailer Hitch, # 11487, you will not need to remove the muffler in order to install the hitch on your 2005 Scion xB. I have included a link to the installation instructions for you to view.
The hitch comes with a ball mount, hitch pin, and clip. If you plan to do some towing you will need a ball, # 19256 (1-7/8 inch diameter) or # 19258 (2 inch diameter). For trailer wiring, use Curt Wiring Harness, # C56030. I have included a link to the installation details for the wiring as well.
