If you already have the StowMaster Tow Bar # RM-501 then you will need the Roadmaster EZ4 Base Plate Kit # RM-52300-4 to flat tow your 2016 Smart fortwo. This base plate kit will not fit electric models. You also need safety cables like part # RM-643 for flat towing.
A complete flat towing setup includes a base plate kit, tow bar, safety cables, vehicle tow bar wiring, a supplemental braking system, and possibly a high-low adapter. For wiring I recommend the Flexo-Coil Wiring Kit # RM-15267. You may also be interested in the Automatic Battery Disconnect with Switch # RM-766 to make disconnecting your battery much easier.
One of the best braking systems that we have is the Stay-IN-Play DUO # SM99251 which, once installed, is very simple to operate. You just connect the breakaway switch and then flip a switch on the unit and you are good to go!
You will also want to ensure that your hitch ball sits at a height that keeps your StowMaster within the 3" safe operating range. You can find more info about this in the attached "High-Low Adapter" article.
It is always best practice to check your owner's manual for any specific instructions related to flat towing your vehicle as well.
