Weight Distribution for a 2018 Toyota Tacoma and R-Pod Trailer
Question:
I have a Toyota Tacoma with factory tow package and R-Pod trailer. Tongue weight close to 600 lbs. Can I assume the factory hitch would be rated for a weight distribution system? Do you think the C17050 would work for me?

Helpful Expert Reply:
The manual for the 2018 Toyota Tacoma mentions needing weight distribution if the trailer weighs over 5,000 pounds so I would concur that the factory hitch is rated for weight distribution. There may be a sticker on the hitch that lists a separate capacity when using weight distribution.
Curt MV Weight Distribution System # C17050 maxes out at 600 pounds tongue weight so you will actually want a system rated higher. Also when calculating tongue weight capacity for weight distribution you will need to add in the weight of anything loaded behind the rear axle of the truck.
Pro Series system # PS49582 is rated for up to 750 pounds so it would be a good option (assuming the tongue weight plus gear behind rear axle does not exceed 750 pounds). I have linked a video review of this system for you. For a compatible hitch ball use # A-90 for a 2 inch or # 19286 for a 2-5/16 inch.
